Garden by Eveline Hood

I bury it deep
In the backyard
Next to the graves of all of our pets
The poor things
I bury it deep in the backyard
Next to the decaying corpses of our pets
In the one ray of sunshine
That reaches this dark place

I bury it deep in the backyard
Next to the corpses, mouldering with maggots
My hands warm in the one ray of sunshine that reaches this dark place
The soil is wet with the life force
Spilled in sacrifice

I sit in the backyard
I hope it will grow

Just another seed
But maybe, maybe, with the fertilizer I fed it
The seed will grow, warm in this one ray of sunshine
That reaches this dark and dank place

Perhaps it will become a rose
It’s petals opening like a virgin’s legs
Enticing that one ray of sunshine
With its glistening folds

Maybe, just maybe,  I can watch it die
Watch it darken at the edges, its petals drooping
Blackening
Wilt
Return to the seed that I buried deep in the backyard

But it hasn’t happened

Yet
