The Hangin’ Tree by Eveline Hood

I knew we were forever on that late January night when you
carved our initials in the stained bark, in the dark at the base of the Hangin’ Tree,
Sealing a pact, a promise that I gave freely as you came to me,
dressed in the flesh of the one I adored, at the time, an almost man, and
I surrendered my soul, the gift of my virginity under the full moon,
I surrendered time and time again, made yours, my blood yours
I tasted your years in each mouthful and you fed me, bled for me,
made me yours and promised you’d never go
That was before.
This is now.
Here I find myself again, here under the Hangin Tree
decades have passed since you promised you’d never go.  You Lied.
Here, after having fed from the small town
A delicious virginal boy, the scruff of a beard dirtying his cheeks
I let him take me, under the Hangin Tree
Let him spend his youthful exuberance, his hands tearing at the expensive fabric,
fumbling at my breasts with inexperienced glee and fill me with his loathsome seed
He smelled like my garden, riot of fragrances that lingers still
Falling back, his face smeary with pleasure, I took his life,
The savory taste of his fearful lust intoxicating.
What is to be.

See how he lays there? How he resembles the fragile creatures with bodies frail as the winter dawn?
An innocent cherub waiting for the paradise that will never be his,
A face that will be the ruin of many hearts and existences
The Angel awakes, Death comes to town
