The night was deathly quiet as he slowly crawled into bed. He couldn’t remember the last time it had been so still…there even seemed to be no crickets chirping outside.
It was rather warm that evening and he had the window cracked open just a bit. The breeze pulled in from the attic fan in the hallway was perfect…almost heavenly.
He was old. So old and tired he sometimes forgot where he was lately, but tonight his mind felt strangely clear.
He had laid there for about 10 minutes and was just about to drift off when he swore he heard a whisper. He couldn’t make it out but his eyes immediately popped open. After a few minutes he closed them but there it was again and this time he made out what the voice said…”Leonard”. Who was trying to talk to him so late at night? And where was it coming from?
He slowly sat up and listened. He heard an owl far in the distance and then the voice again softly saying his name. It sounded like it was coming from right outside his window.
He walked over and pulled back the curtain, looking outside and seeing nothing in the blackness. Then, suddenly, a flash of something behind a tree. Something very shiny. It disappeared quickly but he knew he saw movement, and strangely he felt no fear.
He quickly dressed and opened the patio door, stepping out into the night air. “Leonard” the voice said again, and it sounded female. There was that flash again, and at that point the moon peeked its head from behind the clouds enough for him to see her standing next to the nearest tree. She was a beautiful young thing and he felt strangely aroused but then saw the scythe in her grip. She smiled at him and said “Hello Leonard, my name is Kieran, and it’s time…you must come with me”, and as she led him away she knew her Father was watching. Proudly.
